Comparison and Bias-Correction of Satellite-Derived Precipitation Datasets at Local Level in Northern Kenya

Understanding ongoing trends at local level is fundamental in research on climate change. However, in the Global South it is hampered by a lack of data. The scarcity of land-based observed data can be overcome through satellite-derived datasets, although performance varies according to the region. The purpose of this study is to compute the normal monthly values of precipitation for the eight main inhabited areas of North Horr Sub-County, in northern Kenya.

Community and Impact Based Early Warning System for Flood Risk Preparedness: The Experience of the Sirba River in Niger

Floods have recently become a major hazard in West Africa (WA) in terms of both their magnitude and frequency. They affect livelihoods, infrastructure and production systems, hence impacting on Sustainable Development (SD). Early Warning Systems (EWS) for floods that properly address all four EWS components, while also being community and impact‐based, do not yet exist in WA. Existing systems address only the main rivers, are conceived in a top‐down manner and are hazard‐centered.

Climate Change and Urban Resilience. Preliminary Insights from an Integrated Evaluation Framework

The present paper deals with the investigation of the effects of climate change in the urban systems. The methodology consists in the employment of an MCDA approach, in the form of a system of multidimensional indicators for calculating a multidimensional index of Urban Vulnerability (UVI) as an indirect measure of the urban resilience. Part of the indicators has been processed through the software RClimdex for investigating climate extremes.

Flood hazard scenarios of the Sirba river (Niger): Evaluation of the hazard thresholds and flooding areas

In Sahelian countries, a vast number of people are still affected every year by flood despite the efforts to prevent or mitigate these catastrophic events. This phenomenon is exacerbated by the incessant population growth and the increase of extreme natural events. Hence, the development of flood management strategies such as flood hazard mapping and Early Warning Systems has become a crucial objective for the affected nations. This study presents a comprehensive hazard assessment of the Nigerien reach of the Sirba River, the main tributary Middle Niger River.

Analysis of gender vulnerability to climate‐related hazards in a rural area of Ethiopia

Identifying areas of the world, communities, and women and men that could be damaged by meteorological events (like droughts and floods) has been crucial for vulnerability studies in the last decade. Climate change may differently affect female‐ and male‐headed households, especially in rural areas of sub‐Saharan Africa, where they react in a different way to the effects of adverse weather events. The aim of this work was to analyse a population's vulnerability and resilience to climate‐related hazards, applying a sex‐disaggregated, quantitative methodology at household level.
