This paper investigates different optimisation methods for the finite element model
calibration ...of monitored masonry structures affected by earthquakes. The aim is to establish a
reference numerical model in support of the existing monitoring systems installed on the
structures. The Seismic Observatory of the Structures (OSS), is the Italian network for the
permanent seismic monitoring of strategic structures; during the recent seismic events in central
Italy (2016) it recorded the data of several masonry buildings. In this paper, the data
recorded by the OSS before the seismic events are used to perform an experimental modal
analysis and consequently calibrate a FE model. For the tuning of the model, different optimisation
methods are employed (i.e. genetic optimisation, particle swarm optimisation, simulated
annealing optimisation, etc.) allowing for a first not unique definition of the structural
parameters. Starting from the results of the updating a combinatorial parameter selection is
performed to get the calibrated finite elements model. The calibrated model can be a useful
tool to investigate the dynamic response of the structures, allowing at the same time a preliminary
structural assessment.
