Territorial Resilience: Toward a Proactive Meaning for Spatial Planning

The international debate on resilience has grown around the ability of a community to prepare for and adapt to natural disasters, with a growing interest in holistically understanding complex systems. Although the concept of resilience has been investigated from different perspectives, the lack of understanding of its conceptual comprehensive aspects presents strong limitations for spatial planning and for the adoption of policies and programs for its measurement and achievement.

Thermoelastic finite element model updating with application to monumental buildings

A reliable and predictive model of an existing structure entails the use of model updatingtechniq...ues,whichareusuallyperformedonthebasisofoperationalmodalanalysis campaigns. In this paper, a new model calibration strategy is proposed that adopts a multiphysics approach to exploit data collected by both static and dynamic monitoring systems. More specifically, mechanical and temperature data are assimilated into the model through a thermoelastic updating.

Using Enhanced Cepstral Analysis for Structural Health Monitoring

Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) have been proved to be via-ble to detect damage-induc...ed shifts in the frequency content of structures subjected to external forces. Nevertheless, the Melodic (Mel) Scale is a per-ceptual feature, roughly based on human perception and originally formulat-ed to resemble the biological mechanisms of the auditory apparatus. Thus, its straight application to non-auditive acquisition systems may be misleading.

Landscape resilience and UNESCO Cultural Landscapes. The relation between resilience and the landscape identity in response to the anthropogenic variation of the systems.

In living landscapes, permanence and identity necessitate introducing co-evolutive resilience concepts in planning. Lack of adaptability is identified in the Management Plans of UNESCO “Cultural Landscapes” about discounting identity compared to newcomers. The “Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato” and the “Cultural Landscape of Honghe Hani Rice Terraces” case-studies are identified to investigate social adaptive changes, in a long-term.
